North Carolina
North Carolina is where man first took flight. It was the experiments and vision of the Wright Brothers in Kitty Hawk that gave birth to the worlds first powered aircraft in 1903. The “Tar Heel State” became the 12th State by achieving statehood in 1789. It is home to the oldest “State” university in the country, the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Raleigh is the state capitol and has been such since 1792.The largest city population wise in the state is Charlotte. North Carolina is well known for the fact it was the first of the 13 colonies to officially call for independence from British rule in 1776. Because of the stern stance the colony took against the English, the British used the captured city of Charleston as a base of operations for their push north during the Revolutionary War. The state is also known for being the last state to join the Confederacy in the Civil War. They remained neutral until President Abraham Lincoln called for them to invade neighboring South Carolina, forcing them to take a side. It is also known for being the site of one the countries greatest mysteries, the lost settlement of Roanoke Island. One of the original settlements founded by Sir Walter Raleigh, Roanoke Island’s population mysteriously vanished prior to a resupply voyage in 1590. 100 plus people vanished without a trace from the colony and no answer has ever been found. Along with famous historical figures, other more modern people of fame also came from North Carolina. Some such people are the likes of Billy Graham, Howard Cosell, and Richard Petty.
North Carolina chose the Plott Hound as the State Dog in 1989. The dogs original use was as a “Boar Hound” by German immigrant Jonathan Plott in the 1700’s. It is heralded as a excellent hunting dog with uncanny tracking ability. The state recognizes the Cardinal as its state bird, and named the Gray Squirrel its state mammal in 1969. It is also a great fishing location, with the Channel Bass and Appalachian Brook Trout both being well recognized. If being a tourist is your thing, you may want to hit the Outer Banks, which contains some of the best beaches on the east coast.
