It's so hard to review a breed. I grew up with an Elkhound and he was a good boy. Our idea of dogs and my skill with them has advanced and I regret the life he didn't have because was born in 1972. My Colorado 1990s onward Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes thrive on freedom Nils never had enough of.He was friendly, well trained, learned new tricks as an old dog. He was probably more of a watchdog than my Northern dogs- I remember a person touching our car to greet him while I was inside and he was quite upset. He had limited dog social life but did well.I don't think I'd have another, unless one (preferably a female) showed up at my door as happened to another reviewer. I love Siberians' and Malamutes' sense of humor, their reliability at dog parks (if that's how they choose to socialize), their eagerness to go skiing & swimming, how smoothly they run (& run & run), their songs and dogalogue. A lot of people can't tell the difference between between Northern dogs (tossing wolves into the mix too 🙄) and I doubt I'd turn one down (except wolf hybrids, depending on who's doing the breeding and how their adults are when properly raised). This is a hard question. Dogs can be 5⭐️ with a good breeder, good training or 1⭐️ with great genetics, no socialization until after 4 months and so on. Let's assume positive intent and go with scenario 1.

We had a Norwegian Elk Hound for 14 years. We loved him, and his breed. Only issue is they shed a lot. For that reason we would consider a Elky/poo.

This is the fourth Elkhound I've owned. I absolutely love the breed they are very friendly and loving. Our latest, Typhoon, we bought from this site and he is fantastic. We've started training classes with him and he is picking up the commands quickly with little effort.

We had an Norwegian Elkhound and she lived to be just shy of her 16th birthday. Best dog ever! Easy to train. Very mild upkeep compared to the Golden Retrievers that we have now. We will eventually get another Elkhound.

My boyfriend and I recently bought a Norwegian Elkhound from this site. We love our dog. His name is Tycho and he has made our life complete. He’s a great breed for first time owners. He needs love, brushing, exercise and everything all dogs need, but he is great for us and our lifestyle!

I've had a Norwegian Elkhound for 14 years, recently passed away, she was free to a good home when we got her. Great with cats and other dogs. Loves the snow. Loved camping and just going for car rides.

I had an spellbound for 14 years. One of the most intelligent, loyal, easy to train dogs I have ever owned. Very laid back & quiet. Takes a lot of combing to control hair. They do get sebaceous cists though. Some many have hip issues. Mine didn't.

Norwegian Elkhound Breed Review by James B,
The breed is an excellent choice of dog. They are friendly, loving, but high maintenance. They are true,y beautiful dogs and would be your best friend for life. I've had my Elkins for many years. I even got her from this site. They shed so much, you could probably make a fur blanket and coat if their fur. They're such excellent breed to pick if you have a child of any age. They will certainly try to protect you and your family. I would highly consider this breed for new owners who want a kind loving dog. Just be sure you are ready for the high maintenance with shedding. Otherwise they are very simple and easy to train and take care of. I would totally recommend this breed to my peers.

Norwegian Elkhound Breed Review by Michael
Our first Elkhound was a male who showed up on our door step on Christmas eve. He was a senior dog, sick and hungry. We named him Saint Nick. He was wonderful and much loved. With a Vet to help we nursed him back to good health. He was with us 5yrs. Our 2nd Elkhound was named Nickie and was placed with us. He was with us for 14 yrs. When he passed my family could not move on we cried every day. We finally found a little female Elkhound named Fern which we changed to Sunshine. She was 18 months old then, and 5yrs now. She is the Love of our life. The Norwegian Elkhound is such a wonderful breed. We raised 4 children, and now have 5 grand children and they all have loved our elkhounds. They are so intelligent and loving. They will protect their family with their life. But they are not aggressive. They have all been so easy to train. An amazing breed. And all of them were rescue dogs. But all AKC and from good breeders with exception of the first. which we do not know. The vet was fairly sure St nick was an Elkhound. And now that we are on our 3rd. I would have to say yes St. Nick was an elkhound. The traits are so similar. But each personality different in little ways. I think any dog can change a persons life so much. The unconditional love is awesome. It's too bad people cannot be like that.
