They aren’t for everyone but those of us who have had them in our lives love them. The only aspect that detracts from a 5.0 is shedding. Great family dogs. Strong minded & independent. Early & persistent socialization is necessary. Training & consistent discipline are key. Natural guard dogs. Very gentle with children.

I have had three adult Akitas each living to the age of 13 years. I absolutely adore the breed, admire their beauty and find them so entertaining and wonderful companions. My last one bonded beautifully with a cat that my daughter had rescued and could not keep because they had enough pets. Many of the sites clearly indicate "no cats. " I am of retirement age and although I know I would adore a puppy I'm not sure that that would be the best choice for me in terms of house breaking etc, although I do have a fenced in yard and screened in porch which the other two enjoyed tremendously together. I have no doubt that the Akitas with higher price tags warrant them due to genetics and breeding qualities, but they would be out of my reach. I would prefer a female "reasonably priced". If you can offer any comments or suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Rita Virtuoso

Akita pups and adults are very friendly and intelligent dogs. They like lots of attention and love kids. Easy to train and listen well. Lots of shedding. Very good to use as watchdogs or guard dogs. Similar to a husky or German Shepard with some differences.

Have never loved or been loved or protected as by my Akita. Not for the first time dog owner as they can be stubborn and have different "cues" than most other dogs (and I have owned a range from Jack Russells to Great Pyrs and Maremmas) but they are the most loyal and loving and funny and noble an animal as I have ver known. It was an honour to walk beside my Akita for 13 years.

This breed is amazing, you have to live with one to know what they are all about, not for the novice dog owner because of their little ,stubborn side. When raised in a loving and respectful environment, they will become a great companion and protector of their family and property, very powerful dog so caution should be taken when around young ones.I owned one for almost 11 years and he thought me so much, the only regret I have is that I didn’t t have him before in my life, like all dogs but akitas are a class of their own.

I raised and bred AKC Registered/ Pedigreed Akitas years back but cannot have dogs where I currently live. I miss them. Overall as a hunt and guard dog they are the best, friends with cats but will kill a wolf. I like knowing that if anything is within 5 miles of me in the woods that my Akita will know it and let me know and be ready to fight. Love them always, never strike, nor raise voice in anger. An owner can become Alpha at the time the male pup reaches 5-6 months age when "he" will challenge "you" for the position. Simply hold him so that he cannot move for about 15 minutes and whisper firm words of love and he will never assert authority over you again. I was born a dog man and love all dogs, cats , and am good with livestock. Still, I can eat any animal in the woods too. If I can find another place to live I will want a female to start, then not get a male for another 2 years afterwards. Akitas will give their life for a child and are fearless. They are naturally house-trained. They bark very seldom and will attack strangers and will bite others, a must for anyone wanting a true guard dog. They swim like snakes but do not fight dogs that show no tendency to fight. Forever an Akita stands ready to fight any dog that doesn't submit but they fight to establish dominance and not to kill other dogs. You will want only your immediate family petting and feeding him to develop his instincts fully. A female bonds with men and a male bonds with women. Males are naturally aggressive towards all males which is why your pup will challenge you at 5-6 months of age for alpha position.

And of corse beautiful. I get compliments every where I go. They are always with me. They are a pleasure. I am 72 years old. If you train with love, you will have many years of happiness. Their names were Bliss and Harley. Love them very much

I was given an Akita puppy in 2001 by a friend that had both a male and a female. The temperament, intelligence and loyalty of this breed is phenomenal. My Nikki never destroyed anything in or around my house. She was excellent around my then small kids and grew up to absolutely become inseparable until her passing in 2017. When I decide to get another dog, it will definitely be an Akita!

My family purchased our first akita in March 2017. She is now almost 2 years old. Her temperament is not at all what usually is said about this breed. She is wonderful with young children, other dogs, and even a few of our cats have won her approval. Overall a wonderful family dog.

We just got our baby akita from Greenfield Puppies and she is an absolute angel. She is so intelligent. She somehow came potty trained despite being only 11 weeks old. She already knows her name and is just a bundle of joy. She doesn't park, doesn't make a mess, and listens to us. She is already bonding to me and is such a happy dog. She loves kids and likes to play with our cats. My only concern so far is she is a bit stubborn on a leash but besides that she is a great dog

I have had Akitas for 20 yrs. I will always have an Akita! They are unlike any other breed, the most loyal! Unconditional love! Protective, one family dog, or in my case.. one person dog. My 1st Akita actually would Watch TV. My mom changed the channel and she barked until she changed the channel back to what she was watching. My 3rd Akita, would carry a conversation with you! Anytime someone came to my house, she would lay beside me but have to be involved in the conversation! Each of my Akitas had unique personalities, and I loved each of them for who they were! Beautiful, strong, confident, animals that would do anything for me! I considered them my children. Loved them with my whole heart!

One of the best dogs I’ve ever had! Need firm, consistent training and lots of praise when they are young. They are very intelligent and learn quickly. They must be taught when they are young that you are Alpha and they are not. If training is not consistent, they quickly learn what they can get away with. Just like a child. My Akita was so smart, he figured out different rules for different family members. He knew if dad said come, it meant right now. If mom said come, it meant whenever I get around to it. Very similar to a husky attitude. Just like a child will play mom against dad, these dogs are smart enough to know who they can push and who they cannot. I don’t know if it is true for all Akita’s, but I know from mine, once he knew a rule, he rarely ever broke it again. If he did get in trouble, I really did not even have to punish him, a strict word, and he would literally go hide in a corner for the rest of the day almost as if to punish himself. They are fiercely loyal family members. More personality that some people I know. Highly recommended for someone willing to put in the time and energy to train properly. I’m a firm believer that bad owners make bad dogs. Take the time you need to train and balance correction and praise. They do sleep a lot, so beyond taking him for a walk every day, which he would not allow me to ignore, he was not very high energy. Which was nice. If you are looking for a simple, easy DOG I recommend getting a lab, or another well-known family pet. If you are looking for a family member, with as much stubbornness and personality as some children would have, and you have enough attention to give him, then you would do very well with an Akita. Love this breed!

Akitas are wonderful dogs! They are large, rugged, powerful and look very similar to Gray Wolves. They have a thick coat that comes in many different colors and patterns. They carry themselves with a dignified, impressive appearance. They look imposing, so they make an effective deterrent to burglars. Akitas don\'t need a great deal of exercise. This breed doesn\'t bark much (they are the strong, silent type). They aren\'t clingy or overly-dependent and prefer to stand on their own four feet.

This breed isn\'t for everyone. It is important that you get a puppy and socialize him or her well. I have owned 2 Akitas. Currently my Male puppy is 7 months old and 80 pounds. He is a sweetheart, but he is VERY protective of my 2 boys ages 6 & 5. I think my dog thinks they are HIS children and not mine :) He will not let ANYONE (beside me and my husband) near them until he senses everything is ok. Even my friends that visit often aren\'t able to go near my kids until Burly checks things out. Burly even lovingly nipped me when I spanked my son, LOL! I LOVE THIS and that is why I have an Akita. I didn\'t have to teach him this, its a natural thing with the breed. He has to be with us always or he gets upset! He hates it outside when we are in the house. He likes to be with us. I am a stay at home mom and he gets a good deal of attention. He gets along with our 12 pound shitzu. She boss\'s my Akita around :) I handfed him at 8 weeks on, it helps with their food and water aggression. I recommend you do the same! Research the breed, not all AKitas are like my Burly :) GOOD LUCK

Very protective. Tho she never bit anyone or attacked anyone.. Just read up on this breed before you get one.. Oh and shedding is a lot to take care of 2x year.. It\'s like picking Cotten !!
